Guwahati: In a bid to enhance security measures in tourist destinations, a specialised training programme on ‘tourism policing’ was organised for 155 personnel of the Assam Police, according to an official statement issued on Tuesday.

The training programme was conducted by Rashtriya Raksha University in partnership with the Assam government.

The training session, held at the Lachit Barphukan Police Academy, covered 32 deputy superintendents of police and 123 sub-inspectors. It was designed to strengthen safety mechanisms in tourist hubs and equip officers with updated and professional policing techniques.

As part of the course, participants were familiarised with key legal provisions such as the Foreigners Act, rights of tourists, and relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS).

The programme also focused on the use of digital tools and IT-based applications to improve coordination and provide better support to both domestic and international visitors.

To ensure practical understanding, the training featured interactive learning methods including scenario-based discussions, role-playing activities and case study analysis, enabling officers to effectively handle safety challenges in diverse tourism settings.

Additionally, sessions on cultural awareness, conflict management, emergency handling, stress management and professional behaviour were incorporated to prepare officers for dealing sensitively and efficiently with tourists.

This partnership between Rashtriya Raksha University and the Assam Police represents a significant step in the state’s efforts to ensure a safe and welcoming atmosphere for tourists from across the world.

Notably, Rashtriya Raksha University, located in Gujarat’s Gandhinagar, is a pioneering national security and policing university of India. RRU provides academic research and training in specialized fields such as internal security, cyber forensics, and strategic languages. It serves as a key partner for state governments in professionalizing law enforcement agencies through evidence-based training and global best practices.
