Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that wearing traditional attire will be mandatory for visitors above the age of 12 to enter the historic Batadrava Than in Nagaon district.
The Chief Minister announced during his visit to the Batadrava Than on the occasion of Dol Jatra on Tuesday. He offered prayers and joined devotees, praying for peace and prosperity for all.
Addressing media persons, CM Sarma said the move aims to maintain the sanctity of the sacred site and safeguard its heritage, customs, and spiritual values for future generations.
“Today is the first day of Falgu Utsav (Holi). I came to the Batadrava Than and offered prayers to the Gurujona Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev. I wish the welfare of the people of Assam.”
The Chief Minister observed that visitors currently enter the premises in a variety of attire, underscoring the need to preserve the sanctity of the institution. Referring to the presence of Bhagwat-related iconography within the complex, he emphasized the site’s profound religious significance.

“People expect us to preserve the culture and sanctity of our Satras. We have therefore decided that visitors aged above 12 must wear traditional attire, while children below 12 will be exempt,” he said.
The Batadrava cultural project and the Srimanta Sankardev Abirbhav Kshetra at Batadrava Than opened for public last month. The project has been designed to enhance the spiritual experience of devotees visiting the Batadrava Than, while also improving accessibility for families, elderly devotees, and visitors from different parts of the state and beyond to the sacred birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva.
