The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has announced Jogen Mohan and Terash Gowalla as party’s candidates from Assam for the upcoming biennial Rajya Sabha elections.

Terash Gowalla is a two-time Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) representing the Duliajan constituency in Dibrugarh district.

Jogen Mohan is currently serving as a Cabinet Minister in the Himanta Biswa Sarma-led government. He represents the Mahmora constituency.

The announcement by the party’s high command is being seen as a key move ahead of the biennial polls, strengthening Assam’s representation in the Upper House of Parliament.

The party on Tuesday released a list of nine candidates for the Rajya Sabha polls. In a press statement issued from its central office in New Delhi, the party said its Central Election Committee has approved the names for the upcoming polls scheduled for March 16.

BJP national president Nitin Nabin has been nominated as the party’s candidate from Bihar.

Polling will take place on March 16 between 9 am and 4 pm, with counting scheduled for 5 pm the same day.

The States where seats are falling vacant are Maharashtra, Odisha, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Chhattisgarh, West Bengal, Assam, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh and Bihar.

In Assam, the term of three Rajya Sabha MPs — BJP’s Bhubaneswar Kalita and Rameswar Teli, and opposition-backed Ajit Kumar Bhuyan — will end on April 9, 2026.
