Guwahati: Assam produces nearly 90 per cent of India’s Muga silk and close to 65 per cent of the country’s Eri silk, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Tuesday, underscoring the State’s leadership in the indigenous silk sector.
In a post on social media platform X, Sarma described Assam as the global centre for both Muga and Eri silk, noting that the two traditional fabrics are central to the State’s rural economy and agrarian framework.
With 90% of India’s Muga production, Assam stands as the global home of this iconic silk.

He said the sector aligns with the government’s broader vision of building a self-reliant Assam under the #AtmanirbharAssam initiative.
Calling Muga and Eri more than mere textiles, the chief minister said they represent Assam’s cultural legacy while also serving as key drivers of livelihood for thousands of families in rural and semi-urban areas.
Highlighting the government’s push to strengthen the sector, Sarma said multiple initiatives have been introduced to boost productivity, expand market linkages and ensure stable earnings for silk rearers and weavers.
These include financial aid for farmers, infrastructure support, skill development programmes and efforts to promote Assam silk in domestic and global markets.

The government has also focused on upgrading sericulture practices through modern techniques, while safeguarding traditional methods to preserve authenticity.
Special attention has been given to empowering women weavers, who constitute a significant portion of the workforce in the silk industry.
Muga silk, distinguished by its natural golden hue and durability, is exclusive to Assam and carries a Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
Eri silk, on the other hand, is recognised for its eco-friendly and non-violent production process.
Reiterating his government’s commitment, Sarma said the silk industry will remain a priority area as Assam seeks to promote indigenous industries, boost exports and build a resilient rural economy rooted in its traditional strengths.
