In a major political development ahead of the Assam Assembly elections, senior leaders of the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) stepped down from the party on Monday, reports said.
One of the most prominent departures from the UPPL is Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) MCLA Kampa Borgoyary, who also served as the Leader of the Opposition in the BTC Legislative Council.
Meanwhile, reports said that UPPL Vice President Maothi Brahma Hazowary and Central Secretary Afzal Khan have also tendered their resignations.
As per sources, the leaders are poised to join the Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), indicating a major shift in the political landscape of BTR and a major setback for the UPPL.

In his resignation letter addressed to UPPL president Pramod Boro, Borgoyary cited his “inability to continue active participation in the party’s activities” as the reason for stepping down. The letter, issued from Kokrajhar, struck a courteous tone.
He thanked the party leadership and members for giving him the opportunity to serve as Vice President and described his time in the party as both enriching and humbling. He also expressed hope that the UPPL would continue to grow and work for the aspirations of the people under Boro’s leadership.
