In a major milestone for Assam’s agricultural sector, Karbi Anglong’s GI-tagged fresh ginger has entered the international market in London.
Assam Agriculture Minister Atul Bora flagged off the first consignment of 21.2 metric tonnes of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong ginger to London at a programme held in Guwahati on Monday.
Atul Bora expressed satisfaction over the development and praised the quality of ginger grown in the hill district.
In a post on X, he wrote, “It was a privilege to flag off a consignment of 21.2 metric tonnes of premium fresh ginger at Krishi Bhawan, Guwahati, sourced directly from the hardworking farmers of Karbi Anglong. This marks the first-ever export of GI-tagged Karbi Anglong Ginger from Assam to London, signifying the growing global recognition of our state’s high-quality agricultural produce.”
“Under the dynamic leadership of Hon’ble CM Dr. @himantabiswa, Assam continues to expand its agricultural footprint in international markets. This milestone reflects our government’s commitment to strengthening farmers’ income, enhancing value addition, and building strong global market linkages for Assam’s GI-tagged products,” he added.
Bora extended his compliments to APEDA and NextOn Foods Pvt. Ltd. for facilitating this landmark export initiative in collaboration with farmers and the Agriculture Department.

“We will continue to work tirelessly towards increasing agricultural production across the state, promoting quality enhancement, encouraging exports, and ensuring that Assam’s farmers receive the global recognition and economic opportunities they truly deserve,” he further wrote in the post.
Vineeta Sudhanshu, General Manager, APEDA, who was present in the occasion said, “This is the first time that Karbi Anglong GI ginger is going from Assam to London. In January, we organised an international buyer-seller meet where international buyers came, and our exporters participated. We regularly do these buyer-seller meets, so it is a result of that. They liked our products there and showed interest in purchasing them.”
She added that this is a trial consignment of 1.2 metric tonnes, and if successful, further shipments will follow.
