Aizawl: Mizoram has incurred losses amounting to nearly Rs 960 crore due to the continued spread of African Swine Fever (ASF), which has killed more than 71,000 pigs across the state since 2021, Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Minister C Lalsawivunga told the Assembly on Friday.
Providing details of the impact, the minister said 71,912 pigs have died since the outbreak was first detected in March 2021, affecting 8,966 families dependent on pig farming for their livelihood. Of the total deaths, 52,979 pigs were culled as part of containment measures to curb further transmission of the disease.
During the current 2025–26 financial year alone, 9,711 pigs have died due to ASF, while 3,615 more were culled to prevent the virus from spreading, he informed the House.
Lalsawivunga said that in a significant move to support local pig rearers, the state government led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma declared ASF a “state-specific disaster” in 2024.
He noted that while Union government guidelines generally provide compensation only for culled animals, the state’s decision enabled financial assistance even for pigs that died from the infection.

He added that more than Rs 30 crore in compensation has been disbursed so far to affected farmers across the state.
