Aizawl: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Thursday tabled a Rs 17,469.91 crore budget for the 2026–27 financial year in the Mizoram Assembly, outlining a spending plan that prioritises strengthening social infrastructure and accelerating growth in the agriculture sector.

In addition to the annual budget, the chief minister also placed supplementary demands for grants worth Rs 3,724.25 crore for the ongoing fiscal year before the House.

Presenting his third budget since the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) came to power in December 2023, CM Lalduhoma, who also holds the finance portfolio, said the government would continue to push its flagship ‘Bana Kaih’ (handholding) initiative aimed at enhancing farmers’ incomes and strengthening rural livelihoods.

An allocation of Rs 350 crore has been made for the implementation of the Bana Kaih scheme in 2026–27. Of this amount, Rs 150 crore has been set aside for the procurement of identified key crops to ensure better price support and market access for farmers.

The chief minister projected total revenue receipts for the upcoming fiscal at Rs 17,469.91 crore, including Rs 8,608.08 crore expected from central tax devolution. Total expenditure is estimated at Rs 17,076.92 crore, reflecting the government’s focus on balancing development priorities with fiscal management.

Meanwhile, the Mizoram Assembly on Tuesday unanimously cleared a bill amending the 2014 Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, seeking to formally codify customary practices governing marriage, divorce and inheritance in the state.

The bill was tabled by Chief Minister Lalduhoma in his role as Minister for Law and Judicial Affairs. The revised legislation brings significant changes to traditional norms, particularly in relation to polygamy, inter-community marriages and the property rights of women.
