Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma inaugurated the newly constructed Lovlina Borgohain Sports Arena in Lakhimpur district on Wednesday, providing a major boost to sports development in the region.
Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain, Lakhimpur MLA Manab Deka, other dignitaries, and senior officials were present at the inaugural ceremony.
Constructed at a cost of Rs 140 crore, the stadium is built using world-class technology and is equipped with modern infrastructure and advanced sports facilities.
Developed in two phases, the state-of-the-art complex features a transit house, indoor stadium, staff quarters, two lawn tennis courts, a volleyball court, football ground, 8-lane athletic track, cricket stadium building with a 5,000-seat gallery, cricket ground, and a 2,380-seat football gallery, along with modern lighting suitable for hosting state-level events.
In a post on ‘X’, CM Sarma said, “In Assam we are building world class sporting infrastructure in every district. And we are naming them after our great sporting icons. Today we proudly dedicate the Lovlina Borgohain Stadium in Lakhimpur District to the people.”
During the event, the boxing star interacted warmly with fans, young athletes, and locals. Lovlina expressed her happiness and gratitude, saying she felt proud to see a sports arena named after her in her home region. She encouraged young sportspersons to work hard, stay disciplined, and never give up on their dreams.

Apart from the sports complex, CM Sarma virtually inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for several key development projects in Lakhimpur today. Among the major initiatives were the Lakhimpur branch of the Assam Government Press; road safety enhancement works on state highways and major roads under the ASRIP scheme; and installation of 757 smart LED streetlights in North Lakhimpur town.
Other projects included infrastructure development at North Lakhimpur University; construction of a flood protection wall and guide bund along the Somdiri River and the upgradation project of Lakhimpur Medical College & Hospital.
