Aizawl: The Central government has approved an allocation of Rs 97 crore to transform Sairang railway station into a world-class facility, Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma has informed the state assembly.
Situated about 21 km from Aizawl, Sairang is a terminal station on the 51.38 km Bhairabi-Sairang railway line, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September last year, connecting the state capital to the national railway network.
Lalduhoma told the House on Monday (February 23) that the Ministry of Railways has formally accepted the state government’s proposal to grant the station “World Class” status, paving the way for its large-scale modernisation.
The sanctioned funds will be used to upgrade infrastructure in line with international benchmarks, following Mizoram’s recent integration into India’s railway grid.
The chief minister said the redevelopment plan includes major structural enhancements, with both vertical and horizontal expansion of the existing station building, along with the construction of additional terminal facilities to handle rising passenger volumes.
He added that the project would also focus on extensive beautification of the station complex and its adjoining areas to improve the overall travel experience.
According to Lalduhoma, the tendering process has already begun, and bids have been opened, indicating that work on the project is expected to commence shortly.
Beyond upgrading passenger amenities, the state government is also exploring ways to position Sairang as a key logistics centre. The chief minister said talks are underway with Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw to set up a large warehouse facility in the vicinity of the station.

He noted that while land availability had initially posed a challenge, a joint inspection has now been scheduled after repeated requests from the state. If suitable land is secured, the government plans to establish a major warehousing hub to boost regional trade and support local businesses.
The announcement comes shortly after the launch of the Sairang–Silchar rail service earlier this month, a development that marked Mizoram’s full integration into the country’s railway network.
