Police have arrested two men in connection with the alleged racial harassment and physical assault of a woman doctor from Nagaland posted at AIIMS Gorakhpur, triggering widespread outrage and condemnation.

The victim, a third-year resident doctor specialising in obstetrics and gynaecology, was returning to the campus from a mall on Sunday evening when she was allegedly followed for over a kilometre by three men.

The incident occurred around 8 pm as she approached Gate No. 2 of the institute, near the Army camp area.

According to the complaint, the men subjected her to racial slurs, obscene remarks and intimidation.

One of the accused allegedly removed his shirt to threaten her, while another is accused of touching her inappropriately. The doctor raised an alarm, forcing the group to flee from the spot.

Police said two of the accused — Suraj Gupta and Amrit Vishwakarma, both residents of Deoria district — have been arrested, while efforts are on to trace the third suspect.

The incident sparked strong reactions from the medical community, with the National Federation of Resident Doctors of AIIMS and INIs (NAFORD) highlighting the case on social media and describing the incident as deeply traumatic.

The federation said the victim faced “racially discriminatory comments and stereotypes” linked to her Northeastern identity, calling the incident a serious violation of safety and dignity within a medical campus zone.

In a formal statement, police confirmed that the incident took place on the night of February 22, beginning near Orion Mall and continuing up to Gate No. 2 of the AIIMS campus, where the accused allegedly misbehaved with the doctor, abused her and issued threats when she protested.

Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including charges related to assault on a woman, obscene acts, criminal intimidation and intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace.

Authorities said further investigation is underway and assured strict action against all those involved in the attack.
