Khliehriat: The Jaiñtia National Council (JNC), Khliehriat Circle, on Saturday shut down seven banks in Khliehriat in East Jaintia Hills, Meghalaya, for allegedly failing to observe the public holiday declared in honour of late Shillong MP Dr Ricky AJ Syngkon.
The action was led by JNC Khliehriat Circle president Shanborlang Bamon, accompanied by secretary Symboh Baiar Sumer, who said the institutions had shown disregard for a day of collective mourning and public respect.

The council stated that the holiday was meant to honour the memory of a national leader and should have been observed by all public and private institutions without exception.
Terming the lapse as unacceptable, JNC leaders said such significant days hold deep emotional and civic importance for the people and must be respected.
The organisation also issued a firm message to financial institutions and other establishments, urging them to recognise officially declared public holidays and show sensitivity towards occasions of public grief and remembrance.
The shutdown remained peaceful, with JNC members asserting that their action was aimed at upholding public sentiment and institutional accountability rather than confrontation.
