Imphal: Vungzagin Valte, a BJP legislator from Manipur who had been undergoing prolonged medical treatment after being grievously injured during the outbreak of ethnic violence in 2023, passed away at a private hospital in Gurugram on Friday.

Valte, 61, was a former state minister and a prominent leader from the Zomi tribal community. He represented the Thanlon Assembly constituency and hailed from Pherzawl district in the hill areas of Manipur.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow and recalled Valte’s dedication to public life. In a post on X, the Prime Minister said, “Pu Vungzagin Valte loved serving people and he dedicated his life towards societal progress and well-being. He distinguished himself as an active MLA. His passing is very saddening. My thoughts are with his family, friends and supporters in this sad hour.”

Valte had suffered critical injuries in May 2023 when he was attacked by a mob in Imphal’s Nagamapal locality after ethnic clashes erupted in the state. He was later shifted to Delhi for advanced medical care. After nearly two years of treatment in the national capital, he returned to his home district of Churachandpur in April last year, accompanied by his wife.

However, his health reportedly deteriorated sharply on February 7. According to family members, he was flown back to Delhi the following day in an air ambulance for urgent medical attention. Despite efforts by doctors, he succumbed to his injuries in Gurugram.

Valte began his legislative career in 2012 after winning the Thanlon seat on a Congress ticket. In 2017, he joined the BJP, retained the constituency, and was inducted into the state Cabinet, where he handled the General Administration and Transport portfolios. He secured a third term in the Assembly in 2022.

The Manipur unit of the BJP also mourned his passing, stating that the party was deeply shocked by the news. A spokesperson said Valte’s enduring service to the people of Manipur, particularly to the Kuki-Zo community, along with his resilience during challenging times, would be remembered with respect.

In a post on X, Congress Legislature Party leader Keisham Meghachandra said, “I am deeply saddened by the untimely demise of MLA of Thanlon Assembly Constituency, Pu Vungzagin Valte. His passing is not only a great loss to his family and loved ones, but also to the people of Thanlon and the entire state of Manipur.”
