Jorhat: A massive fire reportedly broke out at the central warehouse of the CSIR-North East Institute of Science and Technology (NEIST), in Assam’s Jorhat district late Thursday night, leading to multiple explosions.
Reports said that the fire destroyed large quantities of stored chemicals and research materials that were stored inside the warehouse.
The intensity of the blaze triggered over ten loud blasts, causing panic among local residents as shockwaves rattled the surrounding area.
Following the incident, Fire and Emergency Services personnel rushed to the spot after receiving information. Firefighting teams from Jorhat Sadar, along with units from Mariani, Titabor, Borhola, Teok and Dergaon, were pressed into service. More than ten fire tenders were deployed to contain the flames.

Further, reports said that specialized teams from ONGC and the Indian Air Force also battled for several hours. After several hours of continuous efforts, the blaze was reportedly brought under control in the early hours of Friday morning.
As of now, the exact cause of the fire and explosions are unknown. Authorities have not yet confirmed the extent of the damage caused by the incident.
Meanwhile, authorities have launched a high-level investigation to assess the damage and determine the origin of the explosions.
