Shillong: Ricky AJ Syngkon, Member of Parliament (MP) from Shillong and a leader of the Voice of the People Party (VPP) passed away on Thursday after reportedly collapsing while playing football.
Reports said that Syngkon had gone to play football with friends at a playground in Mawlai Mawiong. During the match, he collapsed on the field.
He was immediately rushed by his friends to Mawiong Community Health Centre (CHC) for treatment after he collapsed. However, in the absence of a doctor at the facility, he was referred to Dr H Gordon Roberts Hospital in Jaiaw.

Unfortunately, despite medical efforts, Syngkon passed away a short while after being admitted to the hospital at around 8:42 pm. He was 54 years old.
Reports said that Deputy Chief Minister Prestone Tynsong, VPP president Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit, and other legislators and political leaders also rushed to the hospital.
Syngkon represented the Shillong Lok Sabha seat as an MP from the Voice of The People Party. He had defeated 3-time MP Vincent Pala of the Congress by a massive margin of over 3 lakh votes in 2024.
