Guwahati-based ECOSAFE launches cross-border agribusiness venture in Bhutan

Guwahati: ECOSAFE Indo Continental LLP, a Guwahati-based company, is expanding its business footprint beyond India with a major agribusiness venture in Bhutan, marking its first international expansion into the Himalayan kingdom.

The company plans to develop a large-scale Himalayan Black Cardamom cultivation and export project in Dagana Dzongkhag, covering around 300 acres of leased state land across Laja Gewog and Khebisa Gewog.

The project will be implemented in phases, beginning with plantation over 150 acres, followed by expansion to the remaining area and the establishment of a food processing and export-packaging facility.

The venture is structured as a vertically integrated agribusiness model, combining large-scale cultivation with post-harvest processing and grading.

The produce will be marketed under “Brand Bhutan”, targeting premium international markets.

Key export destinations would include India, Bangladesh and the Middle East, where demand for high-quality Himalayan black cardamom continues to remain strong.

According to project plans, Bhutan’s agro-climatic conditions, including mid-altitude zones, high rainfall, shaded forest canopies and suitable soil composition, make the region well suited for commercial black cardamom cultivation.

Plantation will be carried out over two years, with commercial harvesting expected to begin from the third year and peak production projected between the fourth and ninth years of operation.

At full scale, the project aims to position itself as one of Bhutan’s largest organised black cardamom producers, shifting production from fragmented smallholder supply chains to a structured, traceable and export-grade model with consistent volumes and premium branding.

The company estimates that the project will generate both permanent and seasonal employment, create income opportunities for rural youth and contribute to sustainable agriculture through shade-grown cultivation practices that preserve forest cover.

It is also projected to support local economic development through allied services, logistics and processing activities.

The project documentation has been completed and land has been identified in consultation with local authorities, while formal land lease approval and investor onboarding remain the next key milestones.
