Shillong: The Budget Session of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly commenced on Monday with a ceremonial opening marked by the presence of legislators from both the treasury and opposition benches.
According to Assembly officials, the state budget for the financial year 2026–27 will be presented on February 20.
The Governor’s address will set the tone for the session, after which a motion of thanks is expected to be moved, followed by detailed debates and legislative discussions in the days ahead.
Proceedings began with the rendition of Vande Mataram, in line with a recent directive from the Ministry of Home Affairs, followed by the national anthem and the State anthem.
The session is expected to witness extensive deliberations on key issues including illegal mining, budgetary allocations, development initiatives, governance frameworks and sector-specific reforms.
Security arrangements were tightened in and around the Assembly complex as the session got underway, police officials said.
The Budget Session is scheduled to continue until February 27.
