Guwahati: The Budget session of the Assam Legislative Assembly began on a stormy note on Monday, with opposition members disrupting proceedings during the Governor’s address.

As Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya delivered his speech, opposition MLAs entered the Well of the House and raised slogans in protest. The disruption continued for nearly the entire duration of his 40-minute address, leading to repeated noisy scenes inside the Assembly.

At one point, some opposition members attempted to throw copies of the Governor’s speech towards the podium. However, the booklets were promptly taken away by the Assembly marshals deployed to maintain order and security in the House also snatched away other placards and papers being displayed by the MLAs.

More than 20 security personnel, including Assembly marshals, were deployed to cordon off over 30 Opposition MLAs who stayed in the Well of the House throughout the Governor’s address.

During the protest, the Opposition members shouted slogans over a controversial “point-blank shot” video allegedly featuring Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and also demanded justice for noted singer Zubeen Garg.

They squatted on the floor, even as the governor continued with his speech.

During his address, Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya outlined the government’s developmental initiatives and welfare programmes, highlighting key achievements over the past five years.

In the last session of the assembly under this government before the election, Finance Minister Ajanta Neog will present the Vote on Account for 2026–27 in the House on February 17.
