The Centre has approved fish import from Bangladesh though the Dawki Land Port, a decision expected to transform the region’s freshwater and marine fish supply chain by providing more affordable and healthier options.

This development was confirmed by TC Chacko, Regional Coordinator (Dawki), Land Port Authority of India. He said that all necessary permissions and paperwork have been completed, and authorities are now awaiting Indian importers to utilise the opportunity.

“We have received permission to import fishes through our land customs station. All necessary paper work has been completed. We are now awaiting importers from India to take advantage of this landmark decision,” TC Chacko said.

Under this new arrangement, all types of fish can be imported except live fish and hilsa. Bangladesh has restricted export of hilsa to meet its own market demands, allowing export only on special occasions like Durga Puja and other festivals.

“The exporters from Bangladesh are excited over the development,” Chacko said.

He further noted that once importers begin operations, consumers in Shillong and other parts of Northeast could benefir from more competitive prices.

Chacko said that it would take about three hours from Dawki to reach the Shillong market (a total distance of 84 km) and another two-three hours to reach Guwahati.

Lower transportation costs would likely contribute to price reductions while helping maintain freshness, he added.

The step is also expected to improve food safety. Fishes currently available in Northeast markets have often been found contaminated with formaldehyde, a hazardous chemical used for preservation.

“Imported fish from Bangladesh will undergo regular quality checks,” Chacko said.

He urged importers from Assam and Meghalaya to take advantage of the opportunity so that consumers across the North East are benefitted.
