The Embassy of Nepal in New Delhi has conveyed their heartfelt condolences and issued a public advisory following the deaths of nine Nepali nationals in a coal mine explosion in Meghalaya’s East Jaintia Hills district.
In an official statement, the Embassy extended “deepest condolences to the bereaved families,” and prayed for the eternal peace of the deceased and a speedy recovery for those injured.
The Embassy issued public advisory urging Nepali citizens to exercise caution and avoid falling prey to unknown agents or intermediaries offering employment in unsafe or unauthorized locations.
It advised workers to verify details about employers, wages, and benefits, and to complete all necessary legal and procedural formalities before accepting jobs.
“Before taking up any employment, citizens are strongly advised to obtain complete information about the employer, salary, and facilities, and to complete all necessary formalities,” the embassy said.

It may be mentioned that, over 30 people have been killed in the February 5 dynamite blast at the Myngsnat-Thangsko coal mine in East Jaintia Hills.
Reportedly, several of the victims were migrant workers, including nine from Nepal. Seven other Nepali nationals sustained injuries and are undergoing treatment at a local hospital.
The Embassy’s statement further read, “The embassy is in continuous contact with the Ministry of External Affairs, local authorities, and the police to coordinate on medical treatment, other essential services, and compensation for the families of the deceased and injured.”
Families seeking information or assistance have been asked to contact the mission through a dedicated helpline.
Further, according to the statement, the coal mine where the explosion occurred was reportedly being operated illegally. The Embassy cautioned that working in unauthorized mining operations often complicates rescue efforts and makes it difficult to secure compensation and other benefits in the event of accidents.
