Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu has announced that the state government will establish more kayaking and canoeing training centres across Arunachal Pradesh to promote water sports and nurture young talent.

Speaking after flagging off the second edition of the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship at the scenic Tawangchu River in Tawang, the chief minister said the tournament would be developed into a major annual sporting event. The initiative aims to encourage youth participation, boost tourism and strengthen the local economy, according to an official statement.

Khandu highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s natural advantage, pointing to its powerful rivers and vast river basins that are well-suited for adventure sports. He said a proposal to develop five river basins as dedicated training hubs has already been forwarded to the state’s youth affairs and sports secretary for further action.

Kayaking and canoeing are opening new pathways for our youth to explore Arunachal’s mighty rivers, build skill, courage, and compete at national and global levels.

He assured that the government would work closely with technical experts and the Indian Kayaking and Canoeing Association to systematically promote and develop the sport in the state.

Chief Minister Pema Khandu said the state government has started providing official financial support to the Tawangchu Tides International Kayaking Championship and has listed it as a regular annual event under the youth affairs and sports department. He added that the government will also seek corporate sponsorships and explore CSR partnerships to elevate the championship to global standards.

Khandu said hosting such international competitions would significantly enhance tourism and economic activity in the region, while positioning Tawang as a global destination for adventure sports.

He noted that Arunachal Pradesh, the largest state in the Northeast, is blessed with diverse landscapes ideal for adventure activities. Citing the Mechukha Adventure Festival as a successful example, he said the event has already drawn national and international athletes to the state.
