GUWAHATI: In a move aimed at rectifying inaccuracies that emerged after the delimitation process, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has officially corrected the names of several assembly and parliamentary constituencies in Assam.
A corrigendum issued by ECI Secretary Ashwani Kumar Mohal addressed these discrepancies, on Wednesday.
The Dergaon assembly constituency, for instance, has been amended to Gual Gao. Likewise, the name of the Howarghat (ST) constituency was rectified as Howraghat, with a parallel correction to be made for the Diphu (ST) Lok Sabha seat, which falls under Howraghat.
The Salakati (TC) under the Kokrajhar (ST) assembly constituency has been corrected to Salakati (CT), while the Dibrugrah assembly constituency is now officially Dibrugarh. Furthermore, Moran Town (TC) under the Tingkhong assembly constituency has been adjusted to Moran Town (CT).
Regarding the Haflong (ST) assembly constituency in Dima Hasao district, the corrected extent now encompasses the Diyung Valley development block, Jatinga Valley development block, Harangajao IT development block, Diyungbra IT development block, New Sangbar IT development block, Haflong TC, Maibang TC, Mahur TC, Umrangso TC, Langting TC, Harangajao TC, and Diyungbra TC.
The delimitation exercise was conducted by the ECI in Assam and finalised on August 11, maintaining 126 assembly constituencies and 14 Lok Sabha seats, while revising the nomenclature of one parliamentary and 19 assembly constituencies.
In this announcement, 19 assembly and two Lok Sabha constituencies were reserved for Scheduled Tribes (STs), and one Lok Sabha and nine assembly constituencies were reserved for Scheduled Castes (SCs).
All the constituency redrawing was based on the 2001 Census, marking the first delimitation exercise in Assam since 1976, which had been carried out based on the 1971 Census.
