Kohima: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Saturday formally launched the digitisation of old manual birth and death certificates, marking a major step towards fully online management of vital records in the state.
Speaking at the launch, Rio said the initiative would significantly improve service delivery by ensuring accurate data management, easier public access to essential documents and stronger support for evidence-based policy planning.
He also urged citizens to register births and deaths on time, stressing that comprehensive and reliable records were critical for effective governance.
The move follows directives of the Office of the Registrar General of India under the Ministry of Home Affairs.
In line with these instructions, the Department of Economics and Statistics had introduced online registration of births and deaths in Nagaland in April 2022, beginning the transition away from manual record-keeping.
Officials said the state is now preparing to discontinue the issuance of manual certificates altogether, with the system moving towards 100 per cent online registration.

Digitisation of legacy records is aimed at integrating older data into the new digital platform, reducing paperwork and ensuring faster, more reliable services.
Only certificates issued by authorised Registrars of Births and Deaths and supported by official records will be digitised, the department clarified, to maintain authenticity and prevent discrepancies.
The department has appealed to the public to participate in the process by submitting old certificates through the ORGI portal at dc.crsorgi.gov.in, with the goal of creating a comprehensive and secure database of vital records for the state.
The launch event was attended by Akunu S Meyase, Secretary of the Department of Economics and Statistics, Director Neidilhou Keditsu, and other senior officials.
