Guwahati: Guwahati is set to host the 38th Bar Council of India (BCI) National All India Inter-University Moot Court Competition 2026, marking the first time the prestigious legal event will be held in the Northeast.
Officials said the three-day competition will be organised by Assam Royal Global University (RGU) from January 29 to 31 under the aegis of the Bar Council of India and the Bar Council of India Trust–Pearl First.
The event will bring together law students from universities across the country to argue simulated cases in a mock court setting.
RGU Vice-Chancellor A.K. Buragohain said the BCI Moot Court Competition is widely regarded as a benchmark for legal education in India, offering aspiring lawyers a national platform to sharpen their skills in legal research, drafting, oral advocacy and courtroom decorum.
He added that the competition promotes professionalism and excellence within the legal fraternity.
The moot court rounds will feature multiple stages of rigorous legal argumentation and will be evaluated by an eminent panel comprising judges and senior advocates of the Gauhati High Court, along with distinguished academicians from leading law institutions, said Bhuban Chandra Barooah, Dean of the RGU School of Law and Administration.

So far, 65 teams from across the country have registered to participate in the competition, reflecting strong national interest in the event.
Advocate Rakhee Sirauthia Chowdhury said the inaugural ceremony will be attended by Justice Dinesh Maheshwari, Chairperson of the Law Commission of India and former Supreme Court judge, as the chief guest.
The valedictory ceremony will be graced by Supreme Court Justice Ujjal Bhuyan, while Bar Council of India Chairman Manan Kumar Mishra is also scheduled to address participants.
The hosting of the moot court in Guwahati is being seen as a significant step in strengthening legal education and academic engagement in the Northeast.
