Shillong: A woman from Meghalaya who had gone to New Delhi after being promised a job was rescued early Wednesday after she was allegedly forced into sex work.
The rescue was carried out by the Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) Delhi Unit with help from the Delhi Police.
The incident came to light after the woman’s sister called the KSU Delhi Unit from Shillong around 2.30 am, saying her sister was in danger and had been assaulted at the place where she was staying in Delhi.
Acting quickly, the KSU contacted the North East Delhi Police, who coordinated with Malviya Nagar Police Station.
A joint team of police personnel and KSU volunteers then began searching for the location mentioned by the caller.
After nearly two hours, the team found the house and discovered several men inside. The woman appeared to have suffered injuries and was immediately taken to the police station for her safety.
According to KSU Delhi Unit president Marbiang Khongwir, one of the men initially claimed the issue was a dispute over money.
However, further investigation revealed that the woman had travelled to Delhi looking for work but was later forced into illegal activities.
Khongwir said one of the accused was allegedly running a brothel and had pressured the woman into sex work.
When she resisted, she was reportedly beaten and threatened.
All the accused have been taken into police custody. The woman has undergone a medical check-up and is now under protection.
The KSU Delhi Unit said such cases are becoming more common, with young women from the Northeast being lured to big cities with false job offers.
The organisation urged authorities to take strong action against those involved in trafficking.
The union also advised young jobseekers to be cautious and verify job offers, employers and accommodation details before travelling outside their home states.
It added that people from the Northeast facing problems in Delhi can approach the KSU Delhi Unit for help.
