Guwahati: The carcass of an adult female tiger was found in Assam’s Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve (KNPTR), a forest official said on Monday.

The carcass was recovered on Sunday evening in the Kathpora area under the Bagori range in the western part of the park by patrolling forest guards.

Park authorities said a committee has been constituted to conduct a post-mortem examination of the animal. The disposal of the carcass will be carried out in accordance with the guidelines of the National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA).

“A female tiger carcass was recovered in the Kathpora area of the Western Range, Bagori, around 4 pm on Sunday. A committee was constituted by the Director, KNPTR, to carry out the post-mortem examination and disposal of the carcass as per the Standard Operating Procedures of the NTCA,” a forest official said.

Authorities suspect that the tiger died due to infighting among tigers. This is the third tiger death attributed to infighting in Kaziranga in the last five months.

“Preliminary findings during the post-mortem suggest that infighting led to the death of the tiger,” the official added.

On January 3, 2026, another female Royal Bengal tiger was found dead in Kaziranga National Park, and that death was also attributed to infighting. In August last year, two tiger carcasses were recovered in the park. Officials had then stated that the tiger found in Bagori died due to old age, while the one found in Burapahar had died as a result of infighting.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve is renowned worldwide as the iconic home of the one-horned rhinoceros. The reserve recorded 148 tigers in 2024, with an impressive density of 18.65 tigers per 100 square kilometres.

A forest official explained that infighting among tigers is a natural occurrence and usually takes place during territorial expansion. “Tigers are solitary by nature and frequently engage in fights over territory, which can at times lead to death. Such deaths caused by infighting are quite common,” the official said.
