Guwahati: Assam Congress president Gaurav Gogoi on Sunday ruled out any possibility of an electoral alliance with the Badruddin Ajmal-led All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) for the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

Addressing public meetings at various locations in the Hajo–Sualkuchi constituency, Gogoi said that the AIUDF’s hopes of aligning with the Congress for the 2026 Assembly polls were “completely misplaced.” He pointed out that the regional party’s poor performance in the last Lok Sabha elections had exposed its declining political relevance.

“After the AIUDF’s complete failure in the last Lok Sabha elections, its political calculation of crossing the electoral hurdle in the 2026 Assembly elections by aligning with the Congress is entirely misplaced,” Gogoi said.

He added that the Congress was instead working to build alliances with other opposition parties, similar to the coalition formed for the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, in which the AIUDF was deliberately kept out.

Appealing to the people to support the Congress’ vision of a ‘Bor Asom’ (Greater Assam), Gogoi launched a sharp attack on Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, calling him the “most dishonest” chief minister the state has ever had.

He alleged that the BJP government had failed to fulfil major promises, including granting Scheduled Tribe status to six communities of Assam, which, he claimed, proved Sarma’s dishonesty.

Gogoi further accused the Chief Minister of amassing huge wealth in the names of his wife and son. He asserted that if the Congress returns to power, it would confiscate all illegally acquired assets.

Accusing the BJP of dividing society on the lines of religion, language, ethnicity and community, Gogoi said such politics only served personal interests and hindered real development.

He assured that the Congress, if voted to power, would work to “rebuild peace and harmony” in Assam and serve the poor in the same manner as former chief minister Tarun Gogoi had done.

Former Assam Congress president Bhupen Kumar Bora, who accompanied Gogoi at the meetings, also criticised the ruling BJP, alleging that it had failed to deliver on the promises that brought it to power.
