Pakyong: Sikkim’s Pakyong became the hub of aerial adventure on Friday with the inauguration of a three-day Flying Festival and Paragliding Accuracy Championship, officials said.
The event has been organised by the Rhenock Tourism Development Society in collaboration with the state Tourism and Civil Aviation Department. It has attracted the participation of 62 paragliders from different parts of India as well as Nepal.
According to officials, flights are being conducted from two designated take-off points—Amba and Thumki Dara. The competition will consist of a minimum of four rounds and a maximum of twelve rounds, depending on prevailing weather conditions.
The festival aims to promote adventure tourism in the region while providing a competitive platform for experienced paragliders.
The competition is being officiated by judges from Nepal, Mizoram, Assam, West Bengal, and Sikkim, and winners will be awarded in both individual and team categories, officials said.
Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang is scheduled to attend the final day of the championship.
Paragliding has emerged as one of the most popular adventure sports in Sikkim, drawing enthusiasts from across the country and abroad. With its favourable weather conditions, scenic landscapes, and high-altitude take-off points, the state has become a preferred destination for both professional paragliders and adventure seekers.

Officials believe that such initiatives not only boost tourism but also generate livelihood opportunities for local communities while showcasing the state’s vast potential as an adventure sports hub.
