Guwahati: Soldiers of the Indian Army rescued a young woman from drowning in the Brahmaputra near the Saraighat Bridge in Guwahati on January 14, officials said.
The rescue was carried out around 4 pm by personnel of the 236 Inland Water Transport Operational Unit of the Engineers, who were on routine duty aboard marine crafts anchored near Sadilapur Ghat.
According to officials, the soldiers heard cries for help from beneath the Saraighat Bridge and immediately launched a safety boat stationed at the ghat to respond to the emergency.
The woman was pulled out of the river and given first aid onboard the rescue craft, averting a potential tragedy. She was later identified as Barakha Das (21), a resident of Ullubari in Guwahati.

After her condition was stabilised, the woman was handed over to the Pandu Police Station for further necessary action, officials said.
The rescue operation was carried out by Naib Subedar Ali Mohammad, Lance Naik Rajender Singh, Havildar Subhash Chandra and Havildar Magan Singh.
Officials said the timely intervention highlighted the Indian Army’s role in safeguarding lives and assisting civilians during emergencies.
