IMPHAL: The Manipur administration has declared a notice circulated by the Churachandpur-based Joint Student’s Body (JSB) as “totally illegal”.

The student body had earlier advocated for the declaration of every Friday as an official holiday for all government departments and educational establishments in Churachandpur.

In a statement issued recently, Chief Secretary Vineet Joshi voiced the state’s concerns about what appears to be a “deliberate attempt of renaming institutions and places”.

He stressed that the alleged declaration, especially the emphasis on observing every Friday as an official holiday across government offices, schools, and colleges in Churachandpur, violate the law.

The statement further highlighted that the state government has intensified its preventive and precautionary strategies, implementing robust mechanisms to prevent any adverse incidents.

It also stressed on the notion that the spread of such public messages and notifications potentially “jeopardises communal harmony, peaceful coexistence, internal stability, and even national security”. The state government perceives this development with profound seriousness, he added.

In an appeal to the public, the government requested citizens not to rely on such posts “which have been illegally generated” and discouraged any involvement in unwarranted acts of violence.

The JSB, in a statement on October 26, expressed its commitment to maintaining an education-friendly environment in the region, even in challenging times. The JSB noted that their resolution, adopted on August 18, aimed to make government institutions in Manipur observe Fridays as holidays, starting from Deputy Commissioners (DCs) and Superintendents of Police (SPs).
