Shillong: Police in West Garo Hills have taken three individuals into custody for questioning in connection with the attack that resulted in the death of ACHIK member Dilseng M. Sangma at Goalgoan, under the Rajabala Police Station limits.
According to the Superintendent of Police, Tura, multiple police teams conducted late-night operations on Friday as part of the investigation, including searches at the house of a quarry owner suspected to have links to the case.
The quarry owner, however, is currently absconding, and police said efforts are being intensified to track him down and effect his arrest.
The development comes against the backdrop of growing tension in the region.
The ACHIK Krima Council has announced a black flag demonstration scheduled for today, covering the stretch from Tura to Rajabala.
The organisation also said that the post-mortem examination of Dilseng’s body is expected to be carried out around 11 am today.
Dilseng was allegedly attacked by unidentified assailants on Friday afternoon, at about 2 pm, at Goalgoan.
He was initially taken to the Bhaitbari Community Health Centre and later referred to Tura Civil Hospital. However, he succumbed to his injuries while being shifted for advanced medical care.
In the wake of the incident, an emergency meeting was held late Friday night at the office of the Superintendent of Police, West Garo Hills.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy Commissioner, senior police officials and representatives of the ACHIK organisation to assess the situation and ensure that law and order is maintained.
Meanwhile, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, in a video message, condemned the assault and expressed condolences over the death of the youth.
He said the Deputy Commissioner has convened a meeting of various civil society groups to constitute a peace committee.
The chief minister also urged people in the Garo Hills to exercise caution and verify information before circulating news on social media.
Investigations are continuing, and officials said further details will be shared as the probe progresses.
