Aizawl: Parts of Mizoram have seen a marked fall in temperatures over the past few days, prompting the India Meteorological Department (IMD) to warn of dense fog and severely reduced visibility across the state.
Officials at the Aizawl Meteorological Centre said minimum temperatures began dropping sharply with the start of January and are currently lower than those recorded during the same period last year.
Director Sudheer Kumar Dwivedi said several areas are experiencing cold conditions unusual for the season.
Data shared by the IMD show that between January 2 and January 6, minimum temperatures in Lengpui ranged from 6.1 to 9 degrees Celsius, while Aizawl recorded lows between 7.2 and 10.7 degrees Celsius.
During the same period, daytime temperatures remained moderate, with maximums ranging from 18.7 to 22.6 degrees Celsius in Lengpui and 19.2 to 23.2 degrees Celsius in the state capital.

Colder nights were reported from southern Mizoram, particularly Lunglei and Champhai districts along the Myanmar border, where minimum temperatures dropped to between 4 and 7 degrees Celsius over the last three days.
The IMD has forecast dense fog in all districts for the next two days, warning of very poor visibility that could fall below 10 metres in some areas.
Issuing an advisory for farmers, the weather department urged restraint in irrigation and called for proper drainage in agricultural fields.
It also cautioned that persistent fog and low night temperatures could create conditions favourable for the spread of fungal diseases.
