Agartala: Police are probing the recovery of a half-burnt woman’s body from a secluded rubber plantation at Kalitila on the outskirts of Agartala in Tripura, with investigators suspecting an attempt to destroy evidence after the crime.
The body was found when a local youth entered the plantation to collect firewood and noticed a dog behaving unusually.
When he approached the spot, he discovered the animal feeding on human remains that appeared to have been partially burnt. He alerted nearby residents, who then informed the police.
A team from Srinagar Police Station, led by Sub-Inspector Narayan Sen, reached the site soon after. The police station is located about a kilometre from the plantation.
A forensic unit, dog squad and an executive magistrate were also deployed to examine the scene.
Inspector Arunadoy Das, Officer-in-Charge of Srinagar Police Station, said initial observations indicate that the deceased was a married woman, estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old.
He added that investigators believe the murder may not have taken place at the plantation.
According to the police, preliminary evidence suggests the woman was killed elsewhere and her body was later dumped in the rubber plantation, where it was set on fire using oil, dry leaves and branches, apparently to erase traces of the crime.
The victim’s identity has not yet been established. Police officials said no missing person complaint matching the woman’s age has been registered at Srinagar Police Station or neighbouring police stations so far, but details have been shared across all police stations to aid identification.
The police said the investigation is ongoing and that a clearer picture will emerge only after the post-mortem examination is completed.
