Itanagar: Arunachal Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein on Monday said the Centre’s Unnat Jyoti by Affordable LEDs for All (UJALA) scheme has delivered tangible benefits over the past 11 years by expanding access to affordable, energy-efficient lighting and reducing electricity costs for households across the country.
In a post on X, Mein said the large-scale adoption of LED technology under the scheme has led to a significant drop in power consumption and household electricity bills, translating into substantial savings for consumers.
He noted that the initiative has also yielded environmental gains by cutting carbon emissions and encouraging the use of energy-efficient solutions.
Holding the Power and Hydropower portfolios, the deputy chief minister said the programme demonstrates how economic savings and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand.
He added that the sustained push for efficient lighting reflects India’s long-term development approach aimed at balancing growth with sustainability.
Launched by the Centre, the UJALA scheme seeks to make LED bulbs, tube lights and energy-efficient fans available to consumers at affordable prices.
By replacing conventional incandescent lighting, the initiative has helped lower peak electricity demand, reduce stress on power infrastructure and bring down energy costs, particularly for middle- and lower-income households.
Officials said the scheme has also contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, supporting India’s climate commitments and fostering a culture of energy conservation in both urban and rural areas.
Over the years, UJALA has emerged as a key national programme linking consumer welfare with sustainable development goals, they added.
