Aizawl: In a major crackdown on illegal drug trafficking, a man from Assam was arrested in Mizoram’s Saitual district with methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 33.18 crore, the Assam Rifles said on Saturday.
Based on intelligence inputs about drug trafficking near the India–Myanmar border, a joint team of the Assam Rifles and Mizoram Police conducted an operation at Keifang, around 67 km from Aizawl, on Friday, according to an official statement.
During the operation, 11.06 kg of methamphetamine tablets, a banned psychotropic substance, were seized. A vehicle used in the trafficking was also seized.
The accused, identified as Hasan Ali, a resident of Badarpur district in southern Assam, was apprehended during the operation.
He was handed over to the Mizoram Police and booked under the relevant provisions of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985.
Methamphetamine tablets, commonly known as Yaba or party tablets, contain a mixture of methamphetamine and caffeine and are often referred to as the “crazy drug”. The substance is banned in India due to its highly addictive nature and severe health consequences.

In a statement, the Assam Rifles said the operation highlighted its continued commitment to curbing drug trafficking in the border region.
Mizoram shares a 510-km unfenced border with Myanmar and a 318-km border with Bangladesh, making it vulnerable to cross-border smuggling.
