Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) acting chairman Tarique Rahman on Saturday visited Dhaka University and offered prayers at the grave of Sharif Osman Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho, on the third day of his return to the country.
He also offered prayers at the grave of National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam, located beside the Dhaka University Central Mosque. Hadi was buried beside the grave of Nazrul Islam on December 20.
BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir reached the grave premises earlier to accompany Tarique Rahman.
Tarique Rahman left his Gulshan Avenue residence around 10:40 am in a white bulletproof SUV and arrived at the Dhaka University campus at about 11:15 am amid tight security.
After paying his respects, he was scheduled to visit the Election Commission office to complete his National Identity Card (NID) registration and enlist himself as a voter.
He was also scheduled to go to Mahbub Bhaban in Dhanmondi, his father-in-law’s residence, and then visit Evercare Hospital to see his ailing mother.
However, his scheduled visit to the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR), popularly known as Pangu Hospital, to meet those injured during the July 2024 mass uprising was cancelled.
Hadi, a student leader and a prospective candidate for Dhaka-8, was shot in the head on December 12 while travelling in a rickshaw on Culvert Road in Puratan Paltan, a day after the Election Commission announced February 12 as the date for the next national election.
He was airlifted to Singapore for advanced treatment, where he succumbed to his injuries on the night of December 18. Hadi was a prominent figure in the July 2024 uprising and served as the spokesperson of Inquilab Moncho.

Tarique Rahman returned to Bangladesh on Thursday morning after nearly 17 years abroad. His homecoming has drawn widespread attention and strong emotions among BNP leaders, activists and supporters nationwide, with party leaders describing it as historic.
