Meghalaya cabinet minister Sanbor Shullai on Monday assured full support to the Sikh community residing in Shillong’s Punjabi Lane, following concerns raised over the protection of their rights as long-standing residents of the State.

The assurance was given during a meeting at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar here, which was attended by the acting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takht Sahib, Giani Kuldip Singh Gargajj.

The Sikh religious leader is in Shillong to participate in programmes marking the 350th martyrdom anniversary of Guru Tegh Bahadur.

Addressing the gathering, Shullai said the State government stood firmly with the Sikh community in Shillong.

“I can assure you that the government stands with the Sikh community here,” he said, responding to a request by the acting Jathedar for the government’s support in safeguarding the rights of Sikh families who have lived in the area for generations.

Earlier in the day, Giani Gargajj took part in a nagar kirtan that began at Gurdwara Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Laitumkhrah and concluded at Gurdwara Guru Nanak Darbar.

The procession was followed by a Gurmat Samagam, which drew a large number of devotees from across Meghalaya, Assam and other parts of the Northeast.

Speaking at the religious congregation, the acting Jathedar recalled the sacrifice of Guru Tegh Bahadur, who laid down his life in defence of religious freedom and against oppression.

He said the Sikh community has historically stood with the oppressed and continues to uphold the values of truth and justice.

Referring to concerns surrounding Punjabi Lane, Giani Gargajj said any move that could lead to the displacement of Sikh families who have lived in Shillong for nearly two centuries would be unjust.

He asserted that Sri Akal Takht Sahib, along with Sikhs across the world, stands in solidarity with the community in Shillong.

He also urged members of the Sikh community to remain committed to the teachings of the Gurus and encouraged parents to ensure that children learn Punjabi and Gurmukhi to stay connected with the Guru Granth Sahib.

The gurdwara management committee honoured Giani Gargajj on the occasion, while the acting Jathedar felicitated several Sikh personalities for their contributions to the community.

Senior Sikh leaders and a large number of devotees were present at the event.
