Shillong: The Meghalaya government on Wednesday said the ongoing regulated power shutdowns in Shillong and Tura are part of major upgrade works under the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), a Rs. 900-crore project aimed at strengthening the state’s electricity network.
Under the scheme, around 2,600 new transformers are being installed, 3,800 km of ageing wires replaced, and 4,300 km of new lines laid across the state.
Officials said the large-scale exercise is intended to ensure a more stable and reliable power supply in the long run.

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said efforts are being made to keep disruptions to a minimum and to provide timely updates to residents.
He added that the government, MeECL and the Power Department are coordinating closely to improve public communication during the shutdown period.
While acknowledging the inconvenience, Sangma said the temporary disruptions are necessary to achieve lasting improvements in the state’s power infrastructure.
The government has urged the public to extend cooperation, assuring that the ongoing work will translate into noticeable improvements in power supply in the coming days.
