Shillong: A group of members of the Hajong community has issued a formal show-cause notice to Jogadish Hajong, president of the Meghalaya Hajong Welfare Association (MHWA), seeking clarification over what they describe as a “significant conflict of interest” stemming from his simultaneous involvement in political and government roles.
The notice stated that Hajong has been holding multiple positions, including president of the MHWA, district vice-president of a major political party, aspiring MDC candidate for the upcoming GHADC elections, and director of the State Programme Implementation and Monitoring Committee, while heading an organisation that is constitutionally defined as a non-political socio-cultural body.
According to the signatories, the combination of these roles had raised concerns about the neutrality and integrity of the MHWA, which traditionally represented the Hajong community without political affiliation. They argued that the president of such an organization was expected to remain non-partisan to preserve unity, trust, and the cultural institution’s credibility.
The notice asked Hajong to submit a written explanation within seven days, detailing how he intended to address the alleged conflict of interest.
It further requested him to cite any relevant article or clause of the MHWA Constitution that permitted him to hold political posts while serving as the president of the association.
The community members also asked him to clarify whether he intends to step down from the MHWA presidency or relinquish his political roles—including his district party position, MDC candidature, and government appointment—in order to preserve the MHWA’s non-political character.
While acknowledging Hajong’s contributions to the community, the signatories emphasized that the letter was not confrontational but aimed at safeguarding the dignity, neutrality, and unity of the MHWA. They warned that failure to provide a satisfactory response could compel them to consider further action under the law and the community’s constitutional framework.
