Shillong: The Hynñiewtrep Youth Council (HYC) on Saturday reiterated its demand for accountability and swift action in the Mukroh firing case, as the organisation observed the third anniversary of the incident in which five villagers were killed in West Jaintia Hills.
In a statement issued by the Central Executive Council, HYC expressed solidarity with the families of the victims and condemned what it termed as a “mindless and inhumane act” by the Assam Forest personnel on November 22, 2022.
Calling the incident “an open wound in the conscience of the community”, the organisation said the delay in delivering justice has only deepened public frustration.
HYC urged both the Meghalaya and Assam governments to ensure a transparent and independent probe and make the findings public without further delay.

It also demanded prosecution of those responsible for the killings and sustained efforts to resolve the long-pending inter-state boundary dispute to prevent future violence.
While noting that both states had agreed to involve the Central Bureau of Investigation in an independent judicial inquiry, HYC said the prolonged investigation after three years remained “unsatisfactory”.
The Council called on the Meghalaya government to intervene and ensure the probe is expedited so that justice is not denied further.
“Let not the sacrifice of the victims be in vain — justice and peace must prevail,” the statement added.
