Agartala: Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha on Sunday dismissed demands for a CBI inquiry into the recent seizure of banned cough syrup in the state, asserting that the Crime Branch is fully competent to handle the investigation.
A consignment of ‘Escuf’ cough syrup, valued at around Rs 2 crore, was intercepted on October 17 from a goods train at Jirania station in West Tripura. Four people have been arrested so far in connection with the case.
The syrup, reportedly used as an intoxicant in Bangladesh, is prohibited under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Saha said the seizure reflects the state police’s intensified crackdown on narcotics.

“The opposition is now claiming that drugs are flooding the state. The Crime Branch is probing the matter, and they are fully capable of cracking the case and ensuring the conviction of the culprits,” the chief minister said.
“There is no plan to hand over the case to any central agency or the CBI,” CM Saha added.
