Silchar: Security forces in Assam achieved a major breakthrough in their anti-narcotics drive after heroin worth Rs 4.65 crore was seized near Jhujang Pahar in Cachar district during a joint operation by Assam Rifles and Assam Police, officials said on Wednesday.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs, the operation was launched on Tuesday, leading to the recovery of the contraband hidden inside 50 soap cases.
This is the second major drug haul in Cachar within 48 hours. On November 9, a similar joint operation led to the seizure of methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 6 crore.
One person from Silchar was arrested during that raid while transporting 20,000 tablets, commonly known as ‘Yaba,’ along the Silchar bypass.
His mobile phone was also confiscated for further investigation.
A defence spokesperson said the coordinated operations mark a significant step in curbing drug trafficking networks that have been using Assam as a transit route.
Assam Rifles continues to play a crucial role in countering the illicit trade through regular, intelligence-based actions across the Northeast.

Officials noted that the region’s proximity to Myanmar—whose 1,643-km unfenced border touches Mizoram, Manipur, Nagaland and Arunachal Pradesh—has made it a key entry point for heroin and methamphetamine smuggling into India.
Several districts of Mizoram and Manipur share long, porous borders with Myanmar, making enforcement a challenge.
Over the years, parts of Mizoram, Manipur, Tripura and southern Assam have emerged as major corridors for drug syndicates moving narcotics to mainland India and beyond.
