GUWAHATI: Established in 1983, the Athgaon Sarvajanik Durga Puja Samity has not only been a beacon for the local community in celebrating the revered festival of Durga Puja but has also been a cornerstone in shouldering significant social responsibilities over the decades.
This year, the community is in for a treat. Staying true to their legacy of innovation, the samity will celebrate puja with the theme of “Ethnic Tribe Culture”. True to their style, live performance by artistes embodying the essence of the tribal cultural traditions will ensuring an immersive experience for all attendees.
Founded by distinguished names of the local society, including Late BN Harlalka, Late Baikunth Nath Choudhary, Late Balwant Singh, Late RN Pandey, Raj Kishor, Lalan Chaubey, Late Tarakant Tiwari, MD Sirajul Ahmed, and Late Manglanand Thakur, the samity’s goal was not merely to celebrate the festival but to foster a sense of community and collective responsibility.
Their journey reached a milestone in 2008 when they marked their silver jubilee, a testament to their unwavering dedication and the bond that they nurtured within the community.
Over the years, the samity’s role expanded beyond the festivities. They took on the significant task of renovating and managing the revered “Ganesh Mandir” at Athgaon Charali. The initiative for garbage drains cleanliness, undertaken with the assistance of the local councillor, reflects their commitment to the environment and the health of the locals. In a region where the summer heat can be relentless, they ensured that clear and chilled drinking water was available for devotees at the Ganesh Mandir premises.
However, what truly sets the samity apart is its innovative approach to the Durga Puja celebrations. Every year, they present unique themes – from highlighting issues such as child labour to recreating iconic places like the cellular jail and Bangkok Mandir. These themes come alive with live performances by artists, giving devotees a genuine experience.
