Itanagar: Prof. (Dr.) Sumpam Tangjang of the Department of Botany, Rajiv Gandhi University (RGU), has been conferred the prestigious “Scientist of the Year Award–2025” by the Society for Plant Research (VEGETOS).
The honour marks a significant achievement for the university and the state, celebrating Prof. Tangjang’s outstanding contributions to botanical research and academia.
Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu congratulated Tangjang on his remarkable achievement.
Khandu said, “This remarkable achievement is a moment of immense pride and inspiration for all. As the first from the Nocte tribe to earn a Ph.D. and rise to the position of Professor, Prof. Tangjang has set a shining example for the younger generation.”
“Wishing him continued success in his pursuit of knowledge, research, and academic excellence,” he added.
His journey stands as an inspiration for aspiring researchers and students across the region.
University officials and colleagues extended their congratulations, describing the recognition as a proud moment for RGU and a testament to Prof. Tangjang’s commitment to knowledge, research, and academic excellence.
Deputy Chief Minister Chowna Mein lauded Prof. Tangjang’s accomplishment, saying his achievement as the first from the Nocte community to earn a Ph.D. and become a Professor is truly commendable. He added that Prof. Tangjang’s contributions to research and higher education will continue to inspire young scholars across the state.

Established in 1988, it serves as a global platform for botanists, biotechnologists, environmental scientists, and researchers working in various disciplines of plant biology.
