Itanagar: In a show of endurance and adventure, the Indian Army has launched a high-altitude expedition to Mount Kangto, one of the most challenging and least scaled peaks in the Eastern Himalayas, officials said on Monday.

Lieutenant General Gambhir Singh, General Officer Commanding of the Gajraj Corps, flagged off the Mount Kangto Expedition (7,042 m) from a forward base in Arunachal Pradesh.

The mission team comprises 18 soldiers from the Indian Army who will attempt to summit the formidable peak, last successfully scaled in 1930.

Defence spokesperson Lt Col Mahendra Rawat said the climbers will navigate treacherous icy ridges, steep glacial crests, and thin air at extreme altitudes, showcasing the courage, discipline, and determination of the Indian Army.

“The expedition symbolises the Corps’ commitment to adventure, endurance, and excellence in some of the toughest terrains of the country,” he said.

The mission, themed “Josh in the Hearts, Summiting Mount Kangto!”, underscores the spirit of resilience and the unyielding character of the Gajraj Corps, he added.

In a separate initiative, a team of officers from the “Dao Warriors” regiment organised a nationwide outreach programme on the Battle of Walong — the only counter-attack launched by Indian forces during the 1962 war.

The series of presentations, held across schools and colleges in Dimapur, Dibrugarh, Namsai, Delhi, Pune, and Mumbai during October and November, aimed to educate students about the valour and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and Assam Rifles personnel who fought in Walong.

The events drew enthusiastic participation from students, with senior veterans sharing firsthand accounts that lent emotional depth to the sessions.

According to the defence spokesperson, the initiative strengthened civil-military ties while serving as a fitting tribute to the soldiers who fought and fell in Walong’s historic defence.
