Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday directed the Special Investigation Team (SIT) probing the death of singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg to submit its chargesheet by December 8, nine days ahead of the original schedule.

Sarma, addressing reporters in Guwahati, said the investigation had entered its final phase and that all procedural requirements were being expedited to ensure the report’s timely completion.

“The chargesheet was earlier slated for December 17, but I’ve asked the SIT to finish by December 8. We’re fully prepared from every angle,” he said.

The chief minister explained that the case had faced delays because the incident occurred abroad, requiring prior clearance from the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) before filing the chargesheet.

“Since this involves a foreign jurisdiction, MHA approval is necessary. I met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in New Delhi to accelerate the process,” Sarma noted, adding that the SIT would approach the ministry within the next few days and that the chargesheet would likely be filed between December 7 and 10.

His statement comes amid public anger and emotional appeals across Assam demanding justice for Zubeen Garg, whose sudden death left fans and the state’s cultural community in mourning.

The SIT, formed by the Assam government, is investigating the circumstances surrounding his death—an issue Sarma described as one of “deep public sentiment.”

Reiterating his government’s resolve, the chief minister assured that the probe would be fair, thorough, and transparent.

“Every aspect of this case will be examined. We owe it to the people and to Zubeen’s legacy to ensure justice,” he said.
