Agartala: The Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress Committee (TPYCC) has written to Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, demanding swift action and the arrest of those involved in the illegal transport of banned cough syrup seized from a goods train at Jirania railway station in West Tripura last month.
Security forces had recovered 1.07 lakh bottles of the contraband syrup, valued at around Rs. 5.4 crore, from two full wagons of the train on October 15. So far, only one person has been arrested in connection with the case.
In his letter, TPYCC president Neel Kamal Saha described the incident as a “shameful reflection” of how drug trafficking networks have infiltrated state systems, alleging that the railway network was being exploited for large-scale narcotics smuggling.

Saha criticised the delay in arrests, claiming that the culprits behind the racket enjoy political protection.
“Those involved are not ordinary traders; they are influential figures linked to the ruling party, which is why the police hesitate to act,” he alleged.
He added that the seizure is just one of many such incidents highlighting Tripura’s growing role as a drug transit corridor.
“The arrest and strict punishment of the real masterminds would send a strong message to all peddlers,” Saha said, urging the Centre to intervene and ensure accountability.
