Shillong: A family in Meghalaya’s East Khasi Hills district narrowly escaped harm after a mob of around 200 people attacked their home in Sohra’s Khliehshnong area on October 30 night, accusing them of practising witchcraft, police said on Friday.

According to officials, the mob surrounded the residence of one Ham Shangpliang around 9.30 pm and allegedly threatened to set it ablaze.

The family, trapped inside, was rescued following a swift response from the police and local magistrates.

A police statement said the violence was triggered by claims from a boy who alleged he had “visions” of Shangpliang and believed he had been placed under a witchcraft spell (ai ksuid).

The unverified claim fuelled fear among locals, leading to the attack.

As police attempted to disperse the crowd, they reportedly met stiff resistance.

“To ensure the safety of the residents and enable their evacuation, tear gas and stun grenades were used,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Vivek Syiem said.

Reinforcements, including the Special Operations Team (SOT) from Shillong, were called in to restore order.

Through coordinated efforts, 22 people—including minors and members of two other families attending a death anniversary memorial service at the house—were safely rescued and taken to Shillong Civil Hospital for medical examination.

At least eight police personnel were injured during the operation.

Police later identified key instigators and arrested nine individuals in connection with the attack.

A case has been registered at Sohra Police Station, and more arrests are likely as the investigation continues.

Condemning the assault, police urged citizens to refrain from mob violence and superstition-driven actions.

“Such acts of mob justice are dangerous and unacceptable. The law will take its course against those involved,” Syiem said.
