Agartala: A woman digital content creator from Tripura, known for her outspoken online criticism of political leaders, was arrested on Sunday for allegedly posting obscene content on social media, police said.

The accused, identified as Madhavi Biswas, was taken into custody from her residence in Jogendranagar, West Tripura, following a complaint lodged by one Paramita Ghosal of Ramnagar.

The arrest was carried out by a team from the West Agartala police station, officer-in-charge Rana Chatterjee confirmed on Monday.

“Biswas has been accused of spreading obscenity through social media platforms. A case under relevant sections of the IT Act and Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita has been registered against her. She will be produced before the court,” Chatterjee said.

Biswas, who had gained popularity on Facebook for her satirical posts targeting Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Minister Manik Saha, and MP Biplab Kumar Deb, had earlier been detained and questioned over similar remarks.

Last month, a complaint was filed against her for criticising the Prime Minister’s brief visit to the Maa Tripura Sundari temple.

Meanwhile, the Tripura Human Rights Organisation has condemned the arrest, alleging it was politically motivated.

“She was under pressure from police to stop criticising the state government, but she refused. Her arrest is an attack on free expression. We demand her immediate and unconditional release,” said senior advocate and rights activist Purushottam Roy Barman.
