Itanagar: In a major move to tackle the rising problem of drug abuse, Pasighat East MLA Tapi Darang on Saturday inaugurated a ‘De-Addiction-cum-Rehabilitation Centre’ set up by the NGO ‘The Sober Society’ at Gobo in Arunachal Pradesh’s East Siang district.
The newly inaugurated centre, led by Mingat Mibang — a reformed youth who has triumphed over drug addiction — aims to offer a structured recovery space for individuals struggling with substance abuse. Equipped to accommodate 45 residents, the facility provides comprehensive medical and psychological support, dedicated detoxification units, and a 90-day rehabilitation programme.
Amid growing public concerns over privately operated de-addiction centres due to past incidents, including custodial deaths, MLA Tapi Darang urged the management to function with responsibility and transparency. “This centre must serve as a home of transformation for our youth — a place of trust, not fear,” he said.
Darang expressed his satisfaction with the centre’s infrastructure and facilities and assured his full support and cooperation in its operation.
The Sober Society De-addiction cum Rehabilitation Centre shall be recognized as a philanthropic, non-profit, non-political and voluntary organization. The centre has been established with the vision of providing holistic and evidence-based treatment to individuals struggling with drugs and alcohol addiction.
The facility features an administrative office, waiting hall, two dormitories, staff and security quarters, a 60-seat dining hall, a therapeutic hall, and a detoxification room — all monitored for safety under 15 CCTV cameras.

Mibang said, “Our mission is to make this centre a symbol of hope and recovery. We dream of a future where such centres are no longer needed — where our youth live free from addiction.”
The de-addiction-cum-rehabilitation centre emphasizes long-term recovery and social reintegration, offering a supportive residential environment alongside therapeutic interventions for comprehensive care.
